The East Windsor Police Department, as a normal course of action, will seize any property with value that is found abandoned in public, turned over as found property by concerned citizens, seize items from vehicles being towed, and also from persons who have been arrested. In many cases, the property is held for "safe keeping" and can be returned to the rightful owner by making an appointment with the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) Property Officer. Other property, which is seized in conjunction with a crime or an arrest, must be adjudicated fully through the court system and is either ordered "return to owner", "destroyed", or other. Once the court in that matter has returned the appropriate paperwork related to the property, the Property Officer will contact the owner of the property to advise on the court ruling and make appointments for the property to be returned to the rightful owner(s).
