History of the East Windsor Police Department
The East Windsor Police Department was established in 1973, transitioning from being patrolled by Resident State Troopers of the Connecticut State Police to an independent law enforcement agency. Since its founding, the department has been committed to serving the community with professionalism, integrity, and dedication to public safety.
Under the leadership of its first Chief, Gerald Olmsted, the department began with just six full-time police officers. As the town grew—shifting from its agricultural roots to a more industrial and residential landscape—the department expanded to meet the increasing demands of public safety. Today, the East Windsor Police Department has approximately 27 sworn officers and 39 total employees, ensuring comprehensive protection and service for residents and businesses.
Throughout its history, the department has remained stable in leadership, having had only five Chiefs of Police since its inception. Focusing on modern policing techniques, community engagement, and proactive crime prevention, the department continues to evolve while maintaining its core mission of safeguarding the people of East Windsor.
